Are we really sold out for Jesus?

August 23, 2009

“If I firmly believed, as millions say they do, that the knowledge and practice of religion in this life influences destiny in another, then religion would mean everything to me.

I would cast away earthly feelings as vanity.

Religion would be my first waking thought, and my last image before sleep sank me into unconsciousness.

I should labor in its cause alone.

I would take thought for the morrow of eternity alone.

I would esteem one soul gained for heaven worth a life of suffering.

Earthly consequences would never stay my hand, or seal my lips.

Earth, its joys and its griefs, would occupy no moment of my thoughts. I would strive to look upon eternity alone, and on the immortal souls around me, soon to be everlastingly happy or everlastingly miserable.

I would go forth to the world and preach to it in season and out of season, and my text would be: What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?”

Powerful dedication eh? Well, these are the words an atheist wrote and which CT Studd read. Words that spurred Studd to give up his massive fortune and title, and serve the Lord in China, India and eventually die alone in a jungle shack in Africa.

Then there are these words from Jim Elliot who was speared to death in the late 50’s in the Equadorian jungle for the name of Jesus Christ: “He is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he can never lose.”

Christian/Muslim tension in Pakistan

Sectarian violence hits Pakistani town

By Aleem Maqbool
BBC News, Gorja, Pakistan

On a street in the small Punjabi town of Gojra, house after house stands gutted and looted.

One home in particular is the focus of attention. The windows and doors are gone, what is left of the furniture lies gnarled inside, and some of the ceilings have collapsed. People are peering into a small bedroom at the back of the building.

It is from here that the charred bodies of six members of the Hameed family, from Pakistan’s minority Christian community, were recovered. The youngest of the dead was four-year-old Mousa.

We found his father, Almass Hameed, 49, in a crowded hospital ward nearby.

‘Shocked and crying’

“He was such a bright boy. His teachers complained that he was cheeky at times, but nobody could doubt how clever he was. But now he’s gone,” Mr Hameed said, breaking down.

It was like the most horrific movie. They destroyed our lives
Almass Hameed

He described how an angry Muslim mob came through the area, known here as the Christian Colony.

“I think there were thousands,” he said. “My elderly father went out to see what was happening and they shot and killed him. We were all shocked and crying. Before we knew it, they were breaking into the house.”

Mr Hameed explained how he and nine other members of the family hid in the bedroom as the house was over-run.

“We could hear them smashing everything and dividing our belongings amongst themselves,” he said. “Then they started beating on the door saying they would teach us a lesson and burn us alive.”

Soon after, a fire was raging through his house.

“We just couldn’t breathe,” he said. “I grabbed my eldest son and managed to get out of the room through the flames, my brother came out with one of my daughters, but the rest were stuck and we had no way of rescuing them.”

As well as his father and Mousa, Mr Hameed lost his 11 year-old daughter, his wife, a brother, a sister-in-law and her mother.

“It was like the most horrific movie. They destroyed our lives.”

‘Fired shots’

Tensions had risen after allegations that Christians in the nearby village of Korrian had torn up and burnt pages of the Koran at a wedding a few days earlier.

“They started it,” 19-year-old Omar Ali Raza said in Gojra’s marketplace.

“We Muslims are the victims. We gathered to protest about what they did to the Koran in Korrian and just wanted to walk through their area, but they threw stones at us and fired shots.”

“Of course it is bad that Christians died,” he added. “But they provoked the Muslims here. I don’t understand why everyone is on their side.”

But an elderly Muslim man passing by interrupts. “The responsibility is with the one who actually burns the Koran, not all Christians,” he said. “Here, we live together, and there were no problems before this.”

As it happens, a local police chief, Ahmed Javaid, said he believed that the claim that Christians desecrated the Koran was not true in the first place.

“Yes, pieces of paper had been cut up to look like money at a Christian wedding, but they were not pages of the Koran,” he said.

“However, the rumour spread and the issue became politicised.”

Very soon after the allegations from Korrian surfaced, politicians from several parties held large rallies denouncing Christians in the area, calling for action. These were not just politicians from expressly right-wing Islamist parties.

PML-N leaders have visited Gojra in recent days, expressing solidarity with minority communities. But Christians here say they are sceptical.

They accuse the party and others of having previously taken advantage of anti-Christian feelings rather than helping to calm things down.

‘Rare’ violence

Senator Pervaiz Rashid, at the headquarters of the Nawaz party, told me it was very serious in its commitment to minority rights.

“We acknowledge there were problems in Gojra, and it is an embarrassment,” he said. “However, it was an isolated incident and the local president, Qadeer Awan, has now had his party membership suspended.”

“I do not believe that there are any other local politicians in our party involved in such activities.”

Violence of this scale against Pakistan’s estimated three million strong Christian community may be rare (this is the worst such incident in seven years), but complaints of discrimination are certainly commonplace.

The government says it has opened an inquiry into what happened in Gojra, but Asma Jahangir, the chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, is not expecting the type of change she thinks is needed.

“For too long the Pakistani state has protected people with extremist views,” she said.

“It is not just political parties. There are radicalised individuals, and supporters of militant groups within the judiciary, the education system, the bureaucracy and police as well.”

This was not the vision of Pakistan held by its founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

“Minorities to whichever community they may belong will be safeguarded. Their religion or faith or beliefs will be secure,” he said just weeks before Pakistan’s creation in 1947.

“They will be, in all respects, the citizens of Pakistan without any distinction of caste or creed.”

But as Pakistan prepares to mark its independence day, many of its citizens do not see any cause for celebration.

Praying for the king of Saudi Arabia

July 29, 2009

As much as we would like to ignore it, the tensions in the Middle East and terrorism around the world continue to dominate the media. Whether we like it or not, such tension plays a major part in today’s history.

What can be done to advance the kingdom of God among Muslims? This question often comes to my mind. One thing I am doing about it is praying daily for the king and princes of Saudi Arabia. I am praying they will be convicted of sin, righteousness and judgement (John 16:8) and that they will have dreams and visions of Christ that will strike terror in their hearts. I have been praying daily in this manner for more than a year.

Why would I pray such a prayer for so long? Firstly it is the Holy Spirit’s mandate from the Father to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgement as the gospel is preached and openly preaching the gospel is not currently possible in Saudi Arabia. Secondly, I often hear of cases in the Muslim world where Muslims have had visions and dreams, which have turned them to Jesus Christ. With this in mind, and the realization that the holy shrines of Medina and Mecca are in Saudi Arabia and the king and princes are the custodians of such shrines on behalf of all Muslims, I figure that prayers for the conversion of that nation’s leaders would be most influential.

While praying this morning I was led to write this article to all my readers and encourage you to begin praying daily for these king and princes to be convicted by the Holy Spirit and that they would experience dreams and visions that would strike fear in their hearts. Their forefathers in the day of Daniel came under such conviction and fear and Israel was delivered from their hands. Times are different now and we are not calling for Israel to be delivered, but rather that these nations come to Christ and be saved also.

It was reported in recent times that one of the kings of Saudi Arabia once asked a Western Diplomat this question: “If your Christianity is the truth from God, then why are you not trying to convert me?” When I read challenging report this it convicted me of my own timidity and has compelled me to continually pray for these men. May God bless our prayers in this regard.

God is not in the Medicare business!

July 20, 2009

I have seen folks healed instantly when prayed for in the name of Jesus.

I have seen folks slowly recover when prayed for in the name of Jesus.

I have seen folks fail to recover when prayed for in the name of Jesus.

What is my conclusion about all this? Simple: God is not in the Medicare business!

Can God heal sick folk in the name of Jesus? Yes He can. Does God ask Christians to pray for the sick among them? Yes He does, James 5:13-18. Then why do some recover and some do not?

I cannot answer that question directly; I am not God. As a servant of God though I can believe by faith in His word that instructs me to pray in His Son’s name and leave the outcomes to Him. Yes I would love to see all who are prayed for recover, but that’s the compassion that rises up in me at the sight of illness in others. And it is that compassion, accompanied by my minuscule faith, which continues to move me to pray regardless of the outcome.

I realise that healing and any other direct charismata of the Holy Spirit are not mine to possess or to question. Rather, I am to be Christ’s bondservant who is willing to be filled, led, empowered and anointed in His ministry and be subject to His will. For me to think of myself as being anything more than that is presumptuous. Even Jesus on occasions could not heal the sick or witness the manifestation of charismata among some folk. This is not to say that I am blaming others for their lack of faith or unbelief; far from it. I am merely pointing out a fact about ministry as Jesus experienced it, Mark 6:5-6.

Certainly, it is devastating to most when a loved one is not healed, and they leave us. Moreover, how we cope with that loss is important, and it is something disciples should be preparing for from the very beginning of their walk with the Lord. A disciple’s main focus should always be Jesus and Jesus alone in addition to the saving of souls and the eternal destiny of all, including loved ones. Preserving life and lifestyle is not what disciples should expect of God or demand of God.

All disciples belong to Christ and His will governs their lives. They know that in life it is always Jesus and them alone. It is not Jesus and their minister, their wife, their husband, their family, or their friends, but just them and Jesus alone. They know they will live and die with Jesus alone. They know they will suffer with Jesus alone. Therefore, their sole focus from day one has been Jesus, regardless of what may befall them. For them, Jesus will remain the focus of their life, and they will not succumb to life’s circumstances, rather they will overcome them through Jesus.

Job 13:15 “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him: but I will maintain mine own ways before Him.” KJV

Article from: Reuters From correspondents in London July 12, 2009 07:31am

KNOWLEDGE of the Bible is in decline in Britain, with fewer than one in 20 people able to name all Ten Commandments and youngsters viewing the Christian holy book as “old fashioned”, a survey said today.

Forty per cent did not know that the tradition of exchanging Christmas presents originated from the story of the Wise Men bringing gifts for the infant Jesus, while 60 per cent could not name anything about the Good Samaritan, the Durham University study found.

Youngsters were particularly disillusioned, telling researchers that the Bible was “old fashioned”, “irrelevant” and for “Dot Cottons” – a reference to the church-going EastEnders’ character, the National Biblical Literacy Survey 2009 showed.

“It is the first recognition of something which we all knew in our gut. We knew it was there but we weren’t exactly willing to face up to it,” said Rev Brian D. Brown, a visiting fellow at St.John’s College in Durham University.

One respondent to the survey said David and Goliath was the name of a ship while another thought Daniel, who survived being thrown into the lions’ den, was “The Lion King“.

Rev Brown said the survey showed the need to push for greater religious education among young people as knowledge of the Bible among the under-45 age group was in decline.

“We have got to recognise that it (the Bible) is the foundation of our society, upon which our whole culture has been based,” he said.

“To understand it and to live in it you do need an understanding of the Bible.”

Atheists, however, were not unduly worried about the decline in the Bible’s popularity.

“It shows really that religion is becoming less important to people,” said Pepper Harow, campaigns officer at the British Humanist Association.

“The fact that people have little knowledge of the Bible perhaps suggests that it’s becoming less and less relevant to people in the 21st century,” she said.

Despite the lack of enthusiasm about the Bible among the 900 respondents, three-quarters said they owned one and almost a third said it was significant in their lives.

____________________________________________________________________________

 My comments:

Though we tend to hear these results from survey’s quite often we should take a good look at ourselves when we do!

The world is obviouosly getting little from us to convince them they are sinners and, like all of us — they also need to know the saving grace of God.

It is time to return to preaching and teaching the word of God in anyway possible and in every place possible. No matter where I go in the world, there is a glut of singing and dancing and frolocking about in and outside of churches. Sadly though, there is a famine when it comes to Bible reading, preaching or teaching from God’s word.

No wonder lost folks don’t believe the Bible anymore! They just think “doing church” is pretty good entertainment and a cool place to go. So “cool” man, that you don’t feel uncool telling your friends you “do church” on Sundays. Now, if doing church gets the lost along, that’s great. But if they are offered a foreign Jesus who will accept them as they are and live in their hearts because He loves them, they are being deluded! This kind of preaching cannot be backed up with scripture and that is why the Bible is being discarded. One passage alone refutes this modern day erronous, doing church, deceitfulness and that is:

Acts 3:19-20 “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and that He may send Jesus Christ, who was preached to your before.”

No repentance — no refreshment from the Lord. You can’t go out of a “doing church” meeting with Jesus in your heart unless you’ve left the old sinner that came in to that meeting behind. That old sinner has to die, be buried away in immersion and the new man raised in faith in the working of God; it is not about merely accepting Jesus into your heart, Romans 6:2-4 and Colossians 2:11-12.

Where are the preachers, teachers and prophets today who are not compromising and tickling ears with this gospel of compromise? They are very few and far between I can assure you.

Just maybe they are all locked away in prison for calling nations and individuals to repentance? Maybe they have all been killed for the sake of the gospel? Nah, I must be dreaming of the days of the Book of Acts.

Ah, well, I am sure they will be welcomed back one day among the dancing, singing, Bible-starved believers out there who are deluded about a Jesus who lives in their hearts while they live as they always have. I guess I will just have to keep travelling in the highways, byways, towns and cities across the world looking for those Bible-toting preachers so I can point converted sinners who want to be disciples in their direction. If you know of any Bible-toting preachers out there, let me know as it sure will save me a lot of time.

The matter-of-factness of a miraculous life

July 8, 2009

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realize that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13

Living in the context of the promises of God and the miraculous associated with it, should be normal in disciples’ lives. There should be nothing complicated about it. Their love for Jesus and their desire to know Him intimately should result in their being blind to the seductive appeal of their worldly environment. Rather, they should be enlightened about the heavenly environment to which they are going and for which they earnestly long.

Paul, in 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 longed to be at home with the Lord. He also wrote in Colossians 3:1-11 that we should seek the things that are above and set out minds upon them and not upon the things of the earth.

Such intense focus is often misunderstood by fellow-believers and is totally incomprehensible to those in the world who do not know Christ, 1 Corinthians 2:12-16. The intensely focused disciple’s values are vastly different from those with whom they have to do in this world. Fellow-believers who misunderstand such intensity have not yet fully embraced Jesus as their Master, Teacher and Lord. They have merely delighted in Him as their Saviour, despite the fact that they may have been church members for decades. Whereas, the worldly individual, who is total ignorant of spiritual things, considers such intense focus on heavenly matters a threat to their worldly-lifestyle.

As in the case of Peter and John in Acts 3 (when the miraculous suddenly became a mere matter-of-fact in their daily lives) each disciple today is called to the same intimacy Peter and John had with Jesus – the Jesus who wants to live His matter-of-fact, unencumbered life through them. A life lived through disciples who are crucified to the lifestyles of today’s world, Galatians 2:20 and 6:14.

There is an old saying among some world-loving believers, which is heard when they are confronted by sold-out disciples and it goes like is, “They are so heavenly minded; they are of no earthly use.” What a sad indictment on sold-out disciples whose sole euphoria is for the things of Christ.

The times are now upon us wherein the world needs to see sold-out disciples coming forth from Christ’s presence. Disciples who are totally focused on Jesus Christ’s life being lived by His faith in them. A matter-of-fact faith that scoffs at this world’s attractions and those ensnared by them – inside and outside of the church.

TOLERANCE? It is NOT taught in the Bible!

June 9, 2009

I have been sitting on this article for some months now, just meditating on the subject. My conclusion is; Christians are not instructed by the Lord anywhere in the New Testament to be tolerant. As a matter of fact, tolerance is only mentioned once in the New Testament and when the Hebrews acted tolerantly toward others during Old Testament times it always ended disastrously for the whole nation.

However, I am hearing more sermons and reading more articles, both secular and Christian, about how Christians must be tolerant. Why should we be tolerant? Jesus never taught tolerance! As a matter or fact, the only time He made reference to tolerance was when He said that it would be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the judgment of God than for those who reject the preaching of the gospel, Luke 10:10-16, Matthew 10:12-15. It is not mentioned again in the New Testament writings.

Tolerance is akin to compromise! It is the nature of believers who make this world their home, rather than seeking after that which is to come; whatever it costs. Tolerance produces cowards. Tolerance is but the last step before devastation of all that is good and righteous in any land.

In the Christian life, there is no grey or tolerance; there is only black and white. If you have questions about morals, actions, thoughts, decisions and you search the word of God you will always find clear answers. You may not like what you find, but you will find it. God has never once utter revelation that allows His people to take on compromise or a worldly, murky grey lifestyle in His kingdom. God is not a God of confusion; Satan is the author of confusion. Tolerance has its origin in the wisdom that is from beneath; not in the wisdom that is from above. Tolerance and compromise are the authors of vile deeds and not peace. James wrote of such compromise and what it gives birth to in his letter in, 3:10-18.

What did Jesus teach? Did He teach us to tolerate sin and sinners? No! He said call them to repentance. Did He teach us to tolerate our enemies and those who despitefully use us? No! He taught us to love our enemies and pray for those who despitefully use us. Did He teach us to be tolerant of the false doctrine of demons that is currently seeking to wipe His kingdom from the face of the earth? No! He taught us to warn them by preaching about the coming judgment of God and to snatch as many as possible out of the lake of fire.

At this point I am reminded of this little verse: “Some like to live within the sound of a church or chapel bell, but I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell”. Believers, stop compromising. Preach repentance to all for the kingdom of God has come, regardless of the consequences. Stop being tolerant; your Saviour, Teacher, Master and Lord was never tolerant! Love is never tolerant, Hebrews 12:1-13.

So, if Jesus was never tolerant, what then is being taught today from many pulpits and in many Christian books and articles? Compromise disguised as tolerance, that’s what. Why though? So that “doing church” believers avoid the discomforts that will follow if they stand up for the black and white, uncompromising word of God rather than the comfortable, compromising, worldly, grey philosophy of men.

God is involved in politics; like it or not!

June 6, 2009

If I was not a Christian and did not know that God is overseeing politics at the highest level, I would be bewildered by what is happening on the world’s stage at present. We have a talking head fresh out of political nursery school leading one nation. Another running around with every topless young girl he can round up for a photo shoot. Another whose political crew is corrupt and is abandoning ship and leaving him to scuttle the vessel. Another who is a devout atheist and very proud of it.  And then there is “smiley” who is soon to be known as “angry” heading up my nation. And behind them all there are the puppeteers pulling the strings to fulfill their own agendas.

Wow! What a mess! How can God possibly be involved with such chaos? Simple folks; immature believers who love “doing church” rather than “being church” have gone to ground and thus the kingdom of God is failing to stand up and be counted so, waiting in the wings is the collapse of godless Western lifestyle; courtesy of God Himself. There can be no other possible reason for the existence of the type of leaders we now see prancing around on the world’s stage. The Old Testament is full of examples of how God raised up such leaders for His own ends. And as for these current Western leaders? Why, there’s not a profound statesman or leader or renown among them. They are simply buck passers who kowtower to minorities and megalomaniac puppeteers with satanic, one world government agendas.

The prophet Daniel had this to say about God’s involvement in the affairs of mankind and their political leaders: “And He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings, and sets up kings; He gives wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding”, Daniel 2:21, He also said of the kingdom of God that would be given to the disciples of His Son: “…and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth”, Daniel 2:35. And also, Daniel 2:44 “And in the days of those kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall the sovereignty thereof be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever”.

The kingdom of God has not been taking its rightful place in the affairs of mankind lately and for that reason such woeful Western leadership exists in order that troubles and persecution will come on the remnant of God’s kingdom to stir them to action in order to get them back to God’s mandate to seek and save the lost. It is time to stop doing church! Jesus preached, “Repent, for the kingdom of God is coming!” The apostles preached, “Repent, for the kingdom of God has come!” We better return to calling the world to repent and be converted (Acts 3:19-21) not, “Come to church and be entertained”, for we are the kingdom of God and the world needs to know who they are dealing with.

Disciples, our King Jesus is not the soppy, light skinned, blued eyed, Sunday school hero with lambs in His arms! He’s the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who rides upon a white stallion with a war sword going forth to conquer, and He is the judge of the all the living and the dead, Revelation 19:11-16. And He has called us to be His ambassadors of reconciliation and has granted unto us a kingdom that cannot be shaken or moved out of place, Hebrews 12:28-29.

So let’s be what we are supposed to be and challenge this world with evangelism on a massive scale, calling all to repentance before the Western governments (the current gods of western populations) collapse and the enemies of all righteousness storm in with their doctrines of demons to fill the void left by those who will fall away from the “doing church” faith they thought would sustain them. Jesus – raise up your prophets, teachers and evangelists to stand in the ever-widening gap!

Overhead scripture projection is dangerous to spiritual health!

June 4, 2009

I was just born again and hungry for the word of God. One day I heard a sermon, and it aroused my interest. I went to the preacher and asked him if he could give me some scripture references to a portion of his subject matter. He said to me, “Go into my library and on the second shelf to the right of my desk you will find a Bible concordance and in it you will find all the information you need.” In other words, “Study to show yourself approved!” Though I was shocked by his response, I understood his intent, and today I am grateful for his forthrightness. It forced me to read and study the word of God, rather than rely upon him and his knowledge.

Recently, I have noticed in most congregations in the countries I am fortunate to preach in, that when I refer to a particular Bible passage to be studied or read, folks either look to the right or the left of the pulpit. At first I was somewhat bewildered by it, but then I caught on – they were reading the Bible passages from the overhead screens behind me. Few opened their Bibles to read along with me as I preached verse-by-verse.

I will be as blunt as I have ever been in any article I have written; this is downright lazy and extremely detrimental to a believer’s spiritual health!

Recently, at the Bible College where I teach, I asked the 20 or so students in my class if any of them had read the entire Bible. One student raised her hand. I then asked if anyone had read the entire New Testament. Three students raised their hands. This class was composed of young adults, middle-aged adults and elderly adults. Shameful stuff!

Today, I find few people bring a Bible to assemblies and fewer open them during the message. How can a believer grow in faith if they are not familiar with the word of God? How can believers disciple others into God’s kingdom if they cannot refer to passages in God’s word? How can believers find solace during personal troubles if their faith is not in their knowledge of and familiarity with the word of God? How can disciples preach or teach the word of God publicly if they don’t know how to find passages, either by memory of the chapter and verse or its location on a page in their Bible? Thirty minutes of overhead projection of scripture on Sunday robs disciples of the most essential daily ingredient they need – spiritual development based on the use of the living, active word of God on the printed page.

Let’s remove scripture from overhead screens and force disciples back to bringing their swords (in case you have forgotten, the word of God is the Sword of Spirit, Eph 6:17) so they can once again learn how to swing them in the spiritual battles, which confront Christ’s disciples every day. Reading God’s promises on a screen doesn’t help hardly anyone remember where it is in the Bible when it is needed; and boy is familiarity with the written word of God needed today!

The Church of Scotland backs gay priest

The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has voted in support of the appointment of a gay priest.

Reverend Scott Rennie was appointed to a congregation in Aberdeen despite thousands of church-goers signing a petition opposing the move.

His supporters say that if the church had blocked his appointment it would have amounted to illegal discrimination.

After the vote one of Mr Rennie’s supporters, Brian Kerr, read a statement on the priest’s behalf:

“The Church of Scotland is a community of faith gathered around God’s living word and God calls people of many different hues and colours in to his service,” he said.

“In a broad and national church there is more than enough room for us all.”

Reverend Sharon Ferguson of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement says she is delighted by the news.

“At last there has been some sense that’s been shown here,” she said.

“What we actually have is an upholding the decision by the Church to appoint somebody because they are the right person for the post, because they are the person that they feel has been called by God.”
